How Long Does It Take to Rank on Google? Measured Daily on 1,185 New Pages
On the 26 small, low authority sites we measured, the median new page waited 78 days for its first Google impression, and about 1 page in 5 reached the top 10 for any real query within 90 days under a strict definition. That is the honest answer for sites like ours, meaning young sites with little authority publishing long tail tool and content pages. The measurement
Share of pages reaching each milestone
Four milestones per page. First impression means Google showed the page in results at least once that day. First click is literal. Top 10 means a day with average position 10 or better on at least one impression. The strict column requires position 10 or better with at least 3 impressions that day, which filters out one-impression flukes on zero competition queries.

Highlighted rows are the ages people actually ask about. Observation ends about 142 days after publish, and 118 pages were still observable at day 120, so no figure claims anything beyond that.
Reading the curve
What the curve actually says
The bottleneck is being shown at all, not climbing positions. Half of our pages waited 78 days for their first impression. Only 4.1% were shown inside the first week, and 17.8% inside the first month. For a small new site, the first month of a page's life is mostly silence, and that silence is normal.
Clicks run far behind impressions. By day 120 only 11.1% of pages had earned a single click, and the median page had not earned one inside our window. This is not a separate mystery. A null model that predicts clicks purely from each page's impression stream and the fleet's blended CTR of 0.176% expects 110 clicked pages, and we observed 102. The click curve is impression volume working through a thin deep-position CTR, which we measured on the position bands page. It carries no extra signal about quality.
The two top 10 columns disagree on purpose, and the loose one flatters. About half of pages hit a top 10 average position for at least one query within 90 days. But for 65.3% of those pages the trigger was a single impression on a long tail query, and 84.2% of them had still never received a click. The strict definition, position 10 or better on at least 3 impressions in a day, drops the 90 day share to 20.4%. We publish both so you can pick the definition that matches your question.
The spread between sites is wide. Across our 19 sites with at least 20 pages, the share shown within 90 days runs from 5.0% to 94.2%. We publish the spread rather than a cause. Untangling site age, niche, and interlinking from this data would be guesswork, and we do not guess.
Context
What other studies measured
The numbers people quote for this question measure different things, so we quote them with their own definitions attached. Ahrefs, May 2025, method in their words. "We took 1M random URLs seen by our crawler in September 2023 and looked if any of them made it to the top 10 within a year." Their result. "Only 1.74% of newly published pages rank in the top 10 within a year (down from 5.7% in 2017)." Filtered to 2M random URLs with non-empty English content, their figure rises to 6.11%. And of the pages that did reach the top 10, "40.82% of pages that ranked in the top 10 did so within 1 month."
Search Engine Land's guide says SEO "typically takes three to six months to produce measurable results", with six to 12 months for competitive industries. Note the estimand, measurable results, not a ranking. Orbit Media puts it at "about 2-3 months to rank for low-competition keywords and about 4-12 months to achieve significant success in search". The line most of these trace back to is Google's Maile Ohye. "In most cases, the SEO will need four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see the potential benefit."
We draw no ratio between those figures and ours. Ahrefs samples the broad web and asks about the top 10 in their rank database. We track one operator's small new sites and ask when Google first shows, clicks, and ranks a page for any query it chooses. Different populations, different estimands, honestly different answers. What our data adds is the day by day curve, which none of the studies above publish.

Method
How we measured this
Publish dates from git
Every site deploys from a git repository, so a page's birthday is its first commit on the deploy branch. We harvested 1,352 pages this way and spot-checked the URL mapping against live HTTP responses.
Daily Search Console rows
We pulled page and date rows for every property over the API, 177,173 rows in all, paginating past the 25,000 row cap. Totals were cross-checked against the no-dimension route for every property, and all agreed within 1%.
Survival analysis, not averages
An average of the pages that got shown would ignore every page still waiting. Kaplan-Meier estimation counts those pages as censored at the end of their window, which is the standard way to measure time-to-event without survivorship bias.
Four milestone definitions
First impression, first click, first day at average position 10 or better, and the strict variant requiring at least 3 impressions that day. Each is stated next to its number, because the loose and strict top 10 differ by more than double.
The bug the review caught
Our first draft said the median was 91 days. It was wrong. The join matched URLs exactly, and Google reports impressions under trivially different forms of the same address, with and without a trailing slash or an .html suffix. That mismatch counted 93 pages as never shown when Google had in fact shown them. An independent reviewer rebuilt the whole join from raw data, found the variants, and the median fell from 91 days to 78. Every figure on this page is from the fixed join, and the two implementations now agree to the decimal. Two more checks moved the draft. We deleted every 180 and 365 day figure, because our deepest observation is 142 days and quoting past it would be extrapolation dressed as measurement. And we verified that not one page had an impression dated before its publish date, the check that would have exposed a broken date source.
Limits
What this page cannot tell you
Read this before you generalize. Every number here comes from one operator's portfolio. 1,185 pages published between 2026-04-05 and 2026-08-29 on 26 of that operator's own websites, joined from git first commit dates to daily Search Console data across 35 properties and 177,173 page day rows. The sites share one profile. Young domains, low authority, tool and calculator pages plus supporting articles, largely template built, targeting low competition long tail queries in English. No site was excluded for performing badly. The worst site, 5.0% of pages shown within 90 days, counts the same as the best at 94.2%. That spread is the point. These numbers describe small new sites like these, not Google in general. If your site is established, has real authority, or competes on head terms, your timeline will differ in both directions.
Three more honest caveats. Publish dates come from git commits, and a commit can precede the deploy by hours or occasionally longer, so every duration here carries a small upward bias. Publication was batchy, 263 of the pages went live on a single day, which is why the confidence interval resamples sites rather than pages. And calendar cohorts differ. April pages ran a median of 80 days, May pages 44, and the June cohort had not reached its median when the window closed. Cohort and site batches are confounded, one more reason not to read any single number here as Google's clock.
